On Wednesday March 13th, thirteen CWA members from various parts of the state came to the Texas Capitol to ask the nine legislators on the House Business and Industry Committee to support HB 701, the Texas Call Center bill.
If passed, HB 701 would prohibit companies that outsource Texas call centers jobs to other countries from receiving any taxpayer-funded incentives or subsidies. The Texas Call Center bill is part of a National CWA campaign to pass call center bills in states around the country to help stop the trend of job outsourcing.
During meetings with legislative offices, CWA members shared their stories on how important call center jobs are to the financial well being of Texas families and communities. In 2018, over 1,700 Texas call center jobs were eliminated and many call center employees are concerned that their jobs could be next.
While at the capitol, CWA member sent a clear message to legislators that keeping call center jobs in Texas should be one of their top priories. As a follow-up to members meeting with legislators, CWA will be pushing for a public hearing on HB 701 so that our leaders and activists will have an opportunity to testify in support of the bill. If HB 701 receives a majority vote from the House Business and Industry Committee then the bill will head to the full House of Representative.
